About CDCR's Conservation (Fire) Camp Program

California Fire Camp Program

The Conservation (Fire) Camp Program, jointly operated by CDCR, CAL FIRE, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, provides vital support to state, local, and federal agencies during emergencies such as wildfires, floods, and rescue operations. With 35 minimum-security fire camps across 25 California counties, participants—under correctional staff supervision—work on critical environmental and emergency response projects.

CDCR & CAL FIRE Crew Management

CDCR is responsible for selecting participants, overseeing their supervision, and maintaining discipline throughout the program. CAL FIRE manages the upkeep of the camps and directs the daily operations of fire crews. Crews are under continuous supervision, ensuring safety and efficiency during routine assignments and emergency responses, such as wildfires and natural disasters.
